Islamabad: Islamabad Police on Sunday fired on locals who had come to attend Imran Khan’s party PTI’s Jalsa. According to Islamabad police, the shelling was initiated in response to stone-pelting from the protesters, resulting in injuries to several police personnel, including the SSP of Safe City.

Imran Khan’s party leaders on Sunday called for the immediate release of their party founder, Imran Khan, while criticising the government for marginalising the party during a major rally on the outskirts of Islamabad.

The party is staging the rally today to gain support for Imran’s release, who has been imprisoned since August 2023. Imran was expected to be released from prison after a district and sessions court accepted appeals against his conviction in the Iddat case.

Islamabad turned into a battleground as police and the workers engaged in a scuffle. Dozens of people have been injured on both sides. A senior police officer of Islamabad police said that dozens of their officials were injured following alleged stone pelting by Khan’s party workers.

Speaking on the development, a former Pakistan government official, Sayed Z Bukhari said, “We all must strongly condemn the brutal act of violence against families and those attending the peaceful political event of PTI in Islamabad. Police have started shelling and attacking attendees for no reason whatsoever. Cowardly and disgraceful by any standards.”

Lashing out at Shehbaz Sharif’s government, PTI said, “These police officers should be ashamed of themselves, for attacking one the most peaceful crowd ever. IG Islamabad and tout government should STOP playing with people’s lives. This is highly disgusting and shameful, the people sent a huge message today.”
