Para-athlete Manasi Joshi clarifies her statement on cricket after facing backlash

New Delhi: Former World No.1 para-badminton player Manasi Joshi has responded to the backlash after her controversial statement about funding para-sports. In a recent tweet, she clarified her statement and urged the fans to understand her perspective. She is a former world champion in para-badminton women’s singles SL3 category.

Manasi faced heavy criticism on social media after her comments about prioritising funding for para sports over cricket. After facing immense backlash, she issued a clarification and wrote on X “Guys, guys, calm down. I know how bodies run. My request is to brands not government. Government is already doing good job in funding our athletes”.

What was Manasi Joshi’s earlier statement?

The controversy started on Friday, January 3 ,when Manasi posted a tweet on X, taking a dig at the Indian cricket team’s recent performance in the ongoing five-match Test series against Australia. Her tweet came after Jasprit Bumrah and Co. bowled out for 185 runs on Day 1 of the fifth Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG). After that, fans on social media pointed out that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) operates independently and wrote that she needs to focus on her game.

Cricket apna funding khud karta hai, dusre games ko disregard karke apne game ko upar karna apne aap mei disgraceful hai.
Khel uncha rakhiye, bhagwan sab dega. Saare games ki respect kare, dusro ko na giraye.

The Men in Blue are trailing the Border-Gavaskar Trophy by 1-2. They won the first Test in Perth by 295 runs but lost the next two matches out of three. The fifth Test is a must-win for Team India to keep their World Test Championship Final (WTC) hopes alive.
