New Delhi: Every year on January 23, the Parakram Diwas (Day of Valour) is observed in India to mark the birth anniversary of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, one of the greatest freedom fighters in the history of India. He played a crucial role in the Indian freedom struggle and shook the very foundation of the British Raj in the country. The leader of Azad Hind Fauj (Indian National Army) tried to wrest back India from the British colonial rule by dint of force. While he was not successful in the end, the spark that he ignited led to a nationwide protest, ultimately leading to the Independence of India on August 15, 1947.

Parakram Diwas: A day to honour Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose

On January 19, 2021, the Government of India decided to honour and remember Netaji’s indomitable spirit and selfless service to the nation by celebrating his birthday on January 23 every year as Parakram Diwas. It was done to inspire people of the country, especially the youth, to act with fortitude in the face of adversity like Netaji and to ignite a spirit of patriotic fervour.

The first Parakram Diwas was in Kolkata’s Victoria Memorial on January 23, 2021. In the next year, a hologram statue of Netaji was unveiled at the India Gate in New Delhi. In 2023, 21 unnamed islands in the Andaman and Nicobar archipelago were named after the 21 Param Vir Chakra Awardees. In 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Parakram Diwas at Delhi’s Red Fort, the place where the trials of the INA soldiers took place.

The Parakram Diwas this year

This year, the Parakram Diwas will be celebrated in a grand manner from January 23 to January 25 at Barabati fort in Cuttack, where Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose was born. The celebrations will honour Netaji’s legacy on his 128th birth anniversary. The celebrations will be inaugurated by Odisha CM Mohan Charan Majhi. The CM will begin the celebrations by paying homage to Netaji and hoisting the National Flag at the house where the great freedom fighter was born. After that, PM Modi will deliver a video message and there will be a Book, Photo and Archival exhibition with the focus on the life of Netaji, showing rare documents, letters and photographs. Also, there will be cultural performance to honour the legacy of Netaji.
