New Delhi: Couturier Gaurav Gupta presented his Spring 2025 Couture Collection, Across the Flame, earlier this week at Paris Fashion Week. Unlike his previous collections, Across the Flame was inspired by something deeply personal. The collection draws from the tragic fire that engulfed his atelier in Delhi last year, forcing him to cancel his couture show in Paris. The devastating incident not only destroyed his workspace but also left his life partner, Navkirat Sodhi, with severe burns. She had to undergo multiple rounds of surgery following the fire.
After this traumatic event, the couple embarked on a spiritual journey with healers and shamans. They returned transformed and channelled their experience into this collection. Gupta said, “This show is part of our healing.” True to its inspiration, Across the Flame emerged from devastation and walked the runway at Paris Fashion Week as a symbol of rebirth.
Gaurav considers Navkirat his twin flame and poured his emotions and shared experiences into this collection. It is deeply personal to both of them, narrating their journey of healing. The collection stands as a testament to light emerging from darkness—the moment when we feel lost yet find hope.
The soul of this collection lies in astral projection, an out-of-body experience that Gaurav and Navkirat encountered on their healing journey. One couture piece that embodied their connection was the striking Twin Flame ensemble. Since Gaurav refers to Navkirat as his twin flame, this outfit symbolised the flames of transformation that engulfed them last year—yet they emerged stronger and more resilient.
From blue metal breastplates to hand-woven Banarasi brocade, Gaurav Gupta’s work remains truly avant-garde and magnificent.
About Navkirat Sodhi: The Muse for Across the Flame
There was only one person fit to embody the muse of such a personal collection: the woman who lived this journey—Navkirat. She emerged more powerful after the incident, surviving against the odds. Hospitalised in the ICU for two and a half months, she was given only a 50% chance of survival. With 55% of her body burned, Navkirat fought through it all. Gupta described her as “a fighter and a survivor… she is a goddess,” a sentiment that echoed throughout the collection.
Navkirat even walked the runway in an ethereal cream-coloured draped corset gown. The gown intentionally revealed the scars on her arms and legs, making a powerful statement about both strength and vulnerability. Another striking piece was a white wedding gown wrapped in bandages—symbolising the very bandages that once covered Navkirat’s body during her recovery.
Gaurav Gupta’s Across the Flame was far more than just another annual spring collection at Paris Fashion Week. It was a story of transformation and rebirth, reminding us of the infinite light within us all—the resilience that carries us through life’s darkest moments.
