Paris Olympics DJ to file legal complaint for abuse over ‘Last Supper’ tableau

New Delhi: A DJ who performed at the Paris Olympics opening ceremony has lodged a legal complaint after receiving threats and online abuse over ‘The Last Super’ tableau that is believed to have been inspired from Leonardo Da Vinci’s famous painting that depicts Jesus Christ and his apostles.

In her complaint, Barbara Butch has alleged cyber-harassment, death threats, and insults though she hasn’t named any individual or group for the alleged crimes, reports The Associated Press.

Butch’s lawyer Audrey Msellati has said the Paris prosecutor’s office, where the complaint was lodged, would now decide whether to launch a formal police investigation.

Catholic churches and Christians all over the world has been offended and criticised the way cue was taken from the painting while using people from the LGBTQ+ community to create a similar performance.

Faced with mounting criticism, the ceremony’s artistic director Thomas Jolly has insisted that the idea wasn’t inspired from ‘The Last Supper’.

“My wish isn’t to be subversive, nor to mock or to shock. Most of all, I wanted to send a message of love, a message of inclusion and not at all to divide,” Jolly has said.

‘Community tolerance’

Organisers of Paris Olympics have said they had no intention of showing disrespect to any religious group and only wished to celebrate community tolerance.

Butch, who wore a silver headdress during that segment of the show as drag artists, dancers and others flanked her on both sides, has said she was extremely honoured to perform at the ceremony and is still full of joy.

“Whatever some may say, I exist. I’ve never been ashamed of who I am, and I take responsibility for everything – including my artistic choices. All my life, I’ve refused to be a victim: I won’t shut up,” Butch wrote on Instagram.

“I’m committed, and I’m proud. Proud of who I am, of what I am, and of what I embody, both for my loved ones and for millions of French people. My France is France!” she wrote.
