Paris Olympics: IOC to take back bronze medal from USA gymnast Jordan Chiles over scoring dispute

New Delhi: The International Olympic Committee has stripped American gymnast Jordan Chiles of the bronze medal she claimed in women’s floor event.

Romania’s Ana Barbosu will receive her bronze medal after being upgraded from fourth to third, the The International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) confirmed.

The decision was taken after a ruling by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), who cancelled re-evaluated scores of of Chiles.

Team USA coach Cecile Landi had made a scoring appealed that propelled Chiles onto the podium, which was made four seconds after the regulatory deadline of one minute.

Chiles’ score increased to 13.766 points after the review, enabling to jump to third from fifth, earning her a bronze behind Brazil’s Rebeca Andrade and team-mate Simone Biles.

It was a crushing blow for Barbosu, who scored 13.700 and celebrated with the Romanian flag thinking that she had bagged bronze.

“We’re in contact with the national Olympic Committee of Romania to discuss the reallocation ceremony and that of the United States regarding the return of the bronze medal,” an IOC spokesman was quoted as saying by AFP.

“I can barely express my emotions, I can’t believe it,” Barbosu said after learning she was awarded her country’s only medal in the gymnastics competition.

“When I heard the news, I was afraid it wasn’t true, and once I was sure, I hugged my parents and called everyone who had helped me.”

Chiles was left shattered. She posted four broken hearts and wrote on Instagram: “I am taking this time and removing myself from social media for my mental health thank you”.

“All this talk about the athlete, what about the judges? Completely unacceptable. This is awful and I’m gutted for Jordan,” Chiles’ team-mate Sunisa Lee on Instagram.
