New Delhi: Indian men’s hockey team bagged a successive bronze medal at the Olympics after defeating Spain 2-1 on Thursday (August 8) at the Yves Du Manoir Stadium in the French capital. The Harmanpreet Singh-led side came from a goal down to finish the match in a thrilling fashion to win back-to-back medals at the quadrennial showpiece event after 52 years.

Spain took the lead after captain Marc Miralles converted in a penalty stroke in the 18th minute. It was Indian drag-flicker Harmanpreet Singh, who has been on the scoresheet in the tournament as many as 10 times, once again came to the rescue. India rode on its strength of converting from penalty corner with skipper Harmanpreet being the lynchpin. The equaliser came in the dying seconds of the second quarter.

India wasn’t far away from the lead after the skipper struck twice just coming three minutes into the start of the second half. Spain played for the catch up for the rest of the match with the Indian defence having a taxing job to hold to the lead.

PR Sreejesh, who played his last field hockey game of his illustrious career, foiled a Spain chance at the end of the third quarter. Despite Spain taking off their goalkeeper Luis Calzado just three minutes before the final hooter in a bid to square off the scores but Sreejesh made two saves from Spain’s penalty corners to ensure India bagged their second bronze medal on the trot.

The dance celebrations in the dressing room was captured by Hockey India’s social media team. Here’s the video of it:
