New Delhi: Australia’s chief selector George Bailey has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins is set to undergo scans on the ankle injury after his participation in all five Test matches of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against India.
The star all-rounder has been ruled out of the Test series against Sri Lanka due to the birth of his second child. The Australian skipper now faces uncertainty regarding his participation in the Champions Trophy, which begins on February 19 in Pakistan and UAE.
He delivered 167 overs during the five-match Test series against India, the most by an Australian bowler and picked up 25 wickets at 21.36. Australia will open their Champions Trophy campaign against England on February 22. They will play a one-off ODI against Sri Lanka as part of their preparation for the tournament.
He captained Australia to the 2023 ODI World Cup victory in India but since then, has only played two matches in the format to manage his workload. The Aussies have used many stand-in captains during that period. Steve Smith led the side against West Indies while Marsh was captain during the series against England. Josh Inglis also captained Australia in the last ODI in Perth against Pakistan.
Josh Hazlewood also has been ruled out of the Test series against Sri Lanka due to a calf injury. Mitchell Starc, Sean Abbott and Scott Boland are the three frontline pacers in the Australian team for the Sri Lanka tour.
‘Not really sure yet’: Australia chief selector on Pat Cummins’ participation in Champions Trophy
Australian team chief selector George Baily has said that Cummins got a bit of a sore ankle and he’s got a scan coming for that. He further added that team management has to wait for the scans as he’s not sure about his Champions Trophy participation.
“There’s a little bit of work to do. He’s got a little bit of a sore ankle as well, so I think in the next week or so, he’s got a scan coming, and we’ll get a bit more information around where that’s at” Bailey added.
“Not really sure yet. We’ll have to wait and see where that scan comes back and where it’s tracking” Bailey added when pressed on Cummins’ participation in the Champions Trophy.
