Payal Kapadia-FTII row: When All We Imagine As Light director led 139-day protest

New Delhi: Filmmaker Payal Kapadia on Saturday (May 25, 2024) night made India proud by emerging as the first Indian director to win the Grand Prix award at the Cannes Film Festival 2024. She was honoured for her film All We Imagine as Light at the prestigious event.

The much-talked-about movie scripted history at the gala by becoming the first Indian film in 30 years and the first ever by an Indian female director to be showcased in the main competition. While receiving the award, Payal gave a shout-out to the workers of the annual film festival who had protested, demanding acknowledgment and better wages.

What is Payal Kapadia-FTII controversy?

Back in the year 2015, Payal led from the front a student protest against the appointment of actor-turned-politician Gajendra Chauhan as the chairman of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII).

Hinting that his appointment appeared politically coloured, the students claimed that Gajendra did not match the vision and stature of past chairmen of the FTII governing council. As a result of the historic 139-day-long strike, police entered the campus and arrested some of the protesters.

Amid the row, Payal was booked under the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code sections, including 143, 147, 149, 323, 353 and 506. The chargesheet in the case was filed in 2016.

In an attempt to bury the hatchet, FTII recently took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to congratulate Payal on winning the Grand Prix Award, drawing criticism from netizens. The case is still said to be ongoing in the Sessions Court.
