Phil Foden takes home PFA Player of the Year, Cole Palmer wins Young Player award

New Delhi: Manchester City’s midfielder Phil Foden has been awarded the Professional Footballer’s Association men’s player of the year award alongside Chelsea’s Winger Cole Palmer, who was named the youngest player of the year.

This is the first time two English players have won the award since 2009-10, when Wayne Rooney and James Milner won the Player and Young of the Year, respectively. Foden thanked Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola and all the City coaches for their constant support for improvement. He acknowledged feeling pride and gratitude for winning the award, having beaten his teammates Erling Halland, Kyle Walker, and Rodrigo to the competition.

The 24-year-old has already set his sights on the fifth consecutive Premier League title for Man City. He helped the side the previous season, scoring 19 goals and delivering eight assists from 35 games. He is one of the youngest players to have six Premier League titles.

He had previously been selected twice as the best young player, but this was Foden’s first time winning the PFA award. For the 2023-24 season, he was named player of the season for the Premier League and named the Football Writers’ Association (FWA) footballer of the year.

Along with him, Palmer has earned his place after a high-scoring season. In his 34 games in the Premier League last season, the Chelsea midfielder scored 22 goals. His form even got him a national call for Euro 2024. He scored in the final but ended up on the losing side as Spain won their fourth title. There were quite a few contenders Palmer beat, including Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka, Man United’s Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho, Joao Pedro from Brighton and Michael Olise, who will play for Bayern Munich this season.

Phil Foden bags his first PFA Player of the year award having already won the Young player twice before as fellow English player Cole Palmer takes home the Young Player award.  Football Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
