Plastic fantastic? The truth about shortcuts to the perfect body

New Delhi: In today’s image-obsessed world, the pressure to achieve a flawless body is greater than ever. From Instagram models to Hollywood celebrities, we are constantly bombarded with unrealistic beauty standards. It’s no wonder that more people are turning to plastic surgery as a “shortcut” to their ideal physique. But is cosmetic enhancement the fast track to perfection, or does it come with hidden costs? In an interaction with News9Live, Dr. Anmol Chugh, Lead Consultant, Plastics & Aesthetics Centre, CK Birla Hospital, Director, Imperio Clinics, Gurgaon, spoke about the downside of plastic surgeries.

The Boom in Cosmetic Procedures

Plastic surgery is no longer reserved for the rich and famous. According to the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS), nearly 35 million aesthetic procedures were performed globally in 2023, marking a 3.4% increase from the previous year. Liposuction remains the most popular surgical procedure, with over 2.2 million treatments performed worldwide. Non-surgical procedures, such as Botox and fillers, continue to rise, with many seeking quick fixes for aging and contouring concerns. Interestingly, men are also joining the trend. In 2023, men underwent approximately 500,000 Botox treatments and 200,000 filler procedures, showing that the pursuit of youth and beauty is no longer a female-dominated industry.

The Role of Social Media

A major driver behind this boom is social media. Platforms like Instagram and TikTok have normalized cosmetic enhancements, with influencers openly discussing their “tweakments.” The rise of “Snapchat dysmorphia”—where people seek surgery to look like their filtered selfies—has alarmed mental health experts. A 2022 survey by the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery found that 79% of surgeons reported patients requesting procedures to look better in selfies.

Beyond selfies, trends like “Instagram Face”—characterized by sculpted cheeks, full lips, and cat-like eyes—have set a beauty standard that many now chase through cosmetic procedures.

Are These Shortcuts?

While plastic surgery can create instant changes, calling it a “shortcut” is misleading. Every surgical procedure involves risk, downtime, and long-term maintenance. Liposuction removes fat cells, but without lifestyle changes, fat can return. A tummy tuck gives a flatter abdomen, but it doesn’t prevent future weight gain. Similarly, Brazilian Butt Lifts (BBLs) and breast augmentations require aftercare, with some patients needing touch-ups in the future.
Moreover, there’s the psychological aspect. While many feel more confident after surgery, some develop a dependency on procedures, always chasing the next enhancement. Unrealistic expectations can lead to disappointment, and in extreme cases, body dysmorphia.

The Right Approach to Cosmetic Surgery

When done for the right reasons, plastic surgery can be empowering. It can help restore confidence after pregnancy, weight loss, or aging. But the key is realistic expectations and a qualified surgeon who prioritizes safety over trends. At the end of the day, the “perfect body” is a myth. True confidence doesn’t come from surgery alone but from self-acceptance, a healthy lifestyle, and informed choices. While cosmetic procedures can enhance how you look, the best version of yourself is the one that feels happy, inside and out.
