New Delhi: The PM Internship Scheme has turned out to be a big hit. The government has informed the Lok Sabha that the scheme received 6.2 lakh applications for around 1.3 lakh opportunities. The scheme is one of the main initiatives aimed at skilling youth and provide extensive internship opportunities to one crore youth over the next five years in India’s top 500 companies. It was announced in the Budget 2024-25.
The Modi government launched the pilot project of PM Internship Scheme on 3rd October 2024 with an aim to 1.25 lakh internships for the Financial Year 2024-25. The 12-month internship programme will help the youth to work and get experience in real-life business environments, thus bridging the gap between academic learning and industry needs. The government had set the registration period end date on November 10, later it was extended to 15 November.
Harsh Malhotra, MoS, Ministry of Road, Transport & Highways And Ministry of Corporate Affairs, informed the parliament that the government is evaluating and tracking outcomes and ensuring corrective options.
Prime Minister’s Internship Scheme eligibility
The eligibility for Prime Minister’s Internship Scheme include that applicants must be between 21 and 24 years old, who are not employed full-time, and not engaged in full-time education.
The eligible applicants will get a monthly assistance of Rs 5,000 per month for 12 months of which Rs 500 will be contributed by the company through its CSR funds, and Rs 4,500 will be transferred by the central government to the intern’s Aadhaar-linked bank account.
The government will also transfer a one-time grant for incidentals of Rs 6,000 to each intern by the government through Direct Benefit Transfer, upon the intern’s joining at the internship location. The internship opportunities are spread across 24 sectors, including automotive, energy, travel, hospitality, banking and financial services, oil and gas, etc.
