Poland, USA storm into United Cup semifinals as Iga Swiatek, Taylor Fritz shine

New Delhi: Poland and USA are through to the United Cup semifinals after winning their quarterfinal clashes against Great Britain and China respectively on Thursday. Hubert Hurkacz got Poland to a brilliants start with a fine 7-6, 7-5 win over Billy Harris, registering his first win in as many as three singles matches at this year’s United Cup.

After his victory, which gave Poland a 1-0 lead, world number two Iga Swiatek secured a hard-fought 6-7, 6-1, 6-4 victory over Katie Boulter to give them a 2-0 lead. For a position in the finals of the United Cup, Poland will now be up against Kazakhstan in an exciting semifinal clash for a second year consecutively. After going down in the opening set, Swiatek bounced back in the remaining two sets not giving any chance to Boulter.

Taylor Fritz helps USA seal semis spot

On the other hand, Taylor Fritz displayed his outstanding skills to seal the semifinal spot for the United States with straight sets 6-4, 6-4 win over Zhang Zhizhen. Fritz did not offer any chance to his opponent in both the sets as apart from some fighting from Shuai, the American tennis player dominated the sets. This was the second win which USA secured after world number three Coco Gauff eased past Chinese opponent Zhang Shuai 7-6, 6-2 to give her side a 1-0 lead.

United States will now have to wait for Friday’s  quarterfinal clash between Italy and Czech Republic as they will face either of the two sides for a place in the final of the event which takes places on Sunday. Meanwhile, the mixed doubles pair of Desirae Krawczyk and Robert Galloway got the better off Zhang and Sun Fajing 6-3, 6-7, 10-3 to complete a 3-0 clean sweep for the United States, who will be up against Italy or Czechia in the semis.
