Poor gut health with constipation may be linked to development of Parkinson’s: Study

New Delhi: Have you ever imagined that your gut health is linked to your brain health? Well, that is what the new study has found, researchers in the study have noted that individuals who are suffering from poor gut health with constipation and nausea for a long time may trigger the link of developing Parkinson’s disease. According to the study, neurological conditions may start in the gut, not the brain.

Parkinson’s is a progressive neurodegenerative disease. It affects around 8.5 million people across the globe and is majorly characterised by tremors, stiffness and loss of balance.

Gastrointestinal issue linked to 76 people higher chance

The study is published in the Journal of Cerebral Cortex. In the study, the researchers have found a link between a history of damage to the lining of the upper gastrointestinal (GI) tract and the development of Parkinson’s. As per the researchers, a damaged gastrointestinal tract has a 76 per cent higher risk of Parkinson’s.

The science behind the study is not yet clear completely Trisha S. Pasricha, a neurogastroenterologist at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC). Hence, more in-depth study is needed to discover how the gut exerts an influence on the brain. According to Pasricha, decades before developing the typical motor symptoms such as problems in walking and other signs of Parkinson’s, patients with the condition suffered GI symptoms such as constipation and nausea for years.

Gut-first hypothesis

To find out the ‘Gut-first hypothesis’ a retrospective complete study was conducted that involved over 10,000 individuals who underwent an upper endoscopy (EGD). This is a procedure in which an image and diagnosis of the problems are done for patients, which includes the oesophagus, stomach, and first portion of the small intestine.
