New Delhi: Honouring the spirit and determination of para-athletes, Google has dedicated its latest Doodle to the Paralympic Games Paris 2024. Today’s Doodle features animated birds and animals, representing sports players. The animated birds engage in archery, with one bird shooting with one hand and mouth in motion. Another bird is flustered after being hit by the arrow. The Doodle proclaims: Precision, patience, Paris: the Para Archery athletes are aiming for victory!
History of Para archery
Para archery has deep roots in the history of the Paralympic movement. Like many other Paralympic sports, it began as a rehabilitation activity for injured veterans, initiated by Dr Ludwig Guttmann at Stoke Mandeville Hospital in the 1940s. Dr Ludwig organised the first archery tournament for English patients in 1948, with the first international team joining in 1952. Para archery was included in the first Paralympic Games in Rome in 1960 and has been a part of the programme ever since.

India faced disappointment in the archery arena as Sarita Kumari’s impressive run ended in the quarterfinals, while Sheetal Devi, known as the “armless wonder,” was knocked out in the last 16 of the compound women’s open category on Saturday. Sarita, who hails from Faridabad and qualified as the ninth seed, had strong performances in the first and second rounds. However, her dream run was halted by Korea’s top-seed, Oznur Cure Girdi, in the last eight. Oznur, who set a world record with a score of 704 out of 720 in the qualifying round, shot three perfect 10s in the second end to gain a significant five-point lead.
The Paris Paralympics 2024, running from August 28 to September 8, will see over 100 members of the Indian contingent, including 52 athletes, participate in the opening ceremony. Notably, for the first time in Olympic history, the Paralympics’ inaugural ceremony will be held outside a stadium. This year, 84 Indian athletes will compete in the Paris Paralympics 2024, aiming to win 25 medals, including multiple golds. At the Tokyo Paralympics in 2021, India won 19 medals, five of which were gold.
