New Delhi: Spiritual figure Premanand Maharaj, famed for his thoughts, has been making headlines lately and is a famed figure on social media as well. However, when it comes to his health, it is known that both his kidneys had once failed because of a chronic condition. Premanand Ji was suffering from autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease that damaged both his kidneys at a young age. In this condition, the size of kidneys starts to increase and over time, lumps and cysts form. Over time, the kidneys stop functioning, leading to failure. As a result, he had to be put on dialysis but continued to stress that a positive outlook on things made a difference.
Can a positive outlook help with polycystic kidney disease?
In an interaction with News9Live, Dr. Shrey Kumar Srivastav, Senior Consultant at Sharda Hospital, said, “A positive outlook significantly contributes to the management of both acute and chronic health conditions. Optimism and resilience have been shown to enhance overall well-being, mitigate stress, and improve the body’s physiological response to illness. Research indicates that individuals with a positive mindset may experience improved immune function, reduced inflammation, and greater pain tolerance. Furthermore, a constructive attitude encourages adherence to treatment regimens, promotes healthier lifestyle choices, and fosters engagement with social support systems, all of which contribute to better health outcomes.”
In the context of chronic illnesses such as diabetes, hypertension, and arthritis, maintaining a positive perspective can aid in symptom management, reduce the risk of complications, and enhance overall quality of life. Similarly, in acute conditions such as infections or injuries, psychological resilience can facilitate recovery by alleviating anxiety and fostering adaptive coping mechanisms.
However, while a positive outlook is beneficial, it is not a substitute for professional medical care. The management of both acute and chronic illnesses necessitates timely consultation with healthcare professionals for accurate diagnosis, appropriate intervention, and evidence-based treatment. Relying solely on optimism without seeking medical attention may lead to adverse outcomes, including disease progression and complications.
Therefore, an integrated approach that combines psychological resilience with professional medical care is essential for optimal health management. A balanced perspective—where positivity complements but does not replace clinical treatment—ensures the most effective and comprehensive approach to patient well-being.
