Premier League: Arsenal fight back to beat Brentford and climb to second place

New Delhi: Arsenal made a perfect start to 2025, coming from behind to secure a 3-1 win over Brentford on New Year’s Day. Mikel Arteta’s side was put on the back foot early, with Bryan Mbeumo giving the Bees a shock lead in the 13th minute. The hosts took advantage of a sloppy pass from Martin Odegaard, which allowed Mikkel Damsgaard to set up Mbeumo for a clinical finish past David Raya.

Arsenal, however, did not take long to respond. Gabriel Jesus equalised just before the half-hour mark, heading in a parried shot from Thomas Partey after a powerful long-range effort.

The win was vital for Arsenal, who climbed to second in the Premier League, six points behind leaders Liverpool. Brentford, who have now gone four matches without a win, will be frustrated with the errors that led to their defeat.

Brentford’s early goal came against the run of play, but it wasn’t long before Arsenal responded with a strong comeback. After Jesus’ equaliser, the Gunners took control of the match in the second half, punishing Brentford’s defensive lapses.

In the 50th minute, Mikel Merino capitalised on a poorly dealt corner by Brentford’s goalkeeper Mark Flekken, firing home to give Arsenal the lead. Just three minutes later, a defensive error from Nathan Collins allowed Gabriel Martinelli to put the game beyond doubt with a brilliant finish.

Brentford will be disappointed with their performance, especially in defence. Arsenal took full advantage of these mistakes, turning the game around with clinical finishes. Despite their efforts, Brentford could not respond after Martinelli’s goal, leaving them with another home defeat. For Arsenal, the win keeps their title challenge alive as they move up to second in the standings.

Arsenal made a strong start to 2025 with a 3-1 comeback win over Brentford.
