Premier League points table: Ipswich Town move up from bottom two with Chelsea win

New Delhi: Premier League’s newcomers Ipswich Town have had a tough start to life back in the Premier League with the Tractor Boys struggling to win games. Before tonight’s game against Chelsea, they had only won two games all season and hadn’t tasted victory in front of their home supporters. However, that all changed in their final game of 2024 as they beat Chelsea 2-0 at home to record their first Premier League home win since 2002.

This result lifted the club outside of the bottom two of the league table and they move up to 18th position. While they still remain in the relegation zone, Wolves’ draw with Tottenham last night ensured that the Tractor Boys are now just one point off safety, giving a huge boost to their chances of survival in the league. They’re now at 15 points in the league and with games against Fulham and Brighton to kick start 2025, they can get more points to get themselves out of the relegation zone.

Elsewhere, Newcastle United moved back up to fifth in the league with a dominant win over Manchester United. The Red Devils succumbed to another defeat which means their cross-town rivals, Manchester City, move down to sixth in the table after they’d broken into the top five with a win over Leicester City last night. This result leaves Manchester United in 14th place, meaning they head into the new year outside of the top half of the league table.

Aston Villa missed a chance to go back up to sixth in the table after leading Brighton 2-1 for most of the second half. Former Chelsea academy product Tariq Lamptey scored in the 81st minute for the Seagulls to deny Villa from leaving Villa Park with three points, which means both teams finish their 2024 next to each other. Brighton remain in 10th in the table and Aston Villa find themselves in ninth after Fulham’s draw last night.
