Prices of basic goods in Gaza have skyrocketed since the Israel-Hamas war erupted last year.
Most Palestinians living in the war-ravaged enclave have been displaced and are without work, relying on the thin stream of humanitarian aid that is trickling in.
At the marketplace in Gaza’s central city of Deir al-Balah, a small selection of commercial goods can be bought, but at a cost most can’t afford.
“A kilo of potatoes costs 45 shekels (12 US dollars), eggplant costs 20 shekels (5.35 US dollars) and bread costs 15 shekels (4.02 US dollars,” complained Najwa Thoraia, originally from Gaza City.
Other basic products are entirely missing, people say.
“We have no flour, even the basic materials, oil, sugar, tea, the basic materials that we depend on,” said Hassan Zahar, also originally from Gaza City.
The availability of goods in Gaza could fall further in the coming months following the Israeli parliament’s decision to restrict operations of the UN agency helping Palestinian refugees.
UNRWA is the largest aid provider in Gaza.
In hard-hit north Gaza in particular, an escalated Israeli military campaign and restrictions on aid have kept all food and other care from reaching populated areas since mid-October, aid organisations say.
It could set the stage for famine in coming weeks or months, international monitors say.
An Associated Press review shows that Israel is falling far short of US demands to surge the level of humanitarian assistance allowed into Gaza or risk possible restrictions on U.S. military funding.
Support for Israel is a bedrock issue for many Republican voters and some Democrats.
That makes any Biden administration decision on restricting military funding a fraught one for the tight presidential race between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump .
