New Delhi: Priyansh Arya shone in his debut for Punjab Kings (PBKS) in their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 opener against Gujarat Titans (GT) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Tuesday. The 24-year-old left-handed opening batsman from Delhi was bought by the Punjab Kings for a sum of Rs 3.8cr in the IPL 2025 mega auction last year and repaid the faith shown by the team management.
Opening the innings alongside Prabhsimran Singh, Arya showed his class from the very first over against the Gujarat Titans. Although Prabhsimran got out quite early, managing only 5 runs from 8 deliveries, Arya tackled world-class bowlers like Mohammed Siraj, Kagiso Rabada and Rashid Khan with ease.
The left-handed batsman provided a flying start to Punjab Kings by smashing 47 runs off just 23 deliveries with the help of 7 fours and 2 sixes, helping his team post 73 runs at the end of the powerplay. Unfortunately, as soon as the powerplay ended, Arya got trapped by a googly bowled by Rashid and chipped the ball straight to the hands of Sai Sudarshan, who took a regulation catch at covers.
Priyansh Arya’s DPL exploits earned him an IPL contract
The 24-year-old has been a consistent performer for Delhi in domestic cricket, but it was the introduction of the Delhi Premier League (DPL) which provided him the limelight and helped in grabbing everyone’s attention towards his brilliant strokeplay last year. He was one of the star performers in the inaugural edition of the DPL.
Representing South Delhi Superstarz in the tournament, Priyansh was the standout performer for the team. He was the highest run-getter in the tournament, with 608 runs in 10 innings. He also had the most number of centuries in the tournament (2), along with the highest score of 120 off just 50 balls where he hit six sixes in an over and grabbed the eyeballs of the all IPL scouts and selectors.
With such an explosive debut in the IPL, all eyes will be on Arya to see if he can continue his red-hot form and establish himself as a key player for the Punjab Kings.
