New Delhi: Punjab Kings (PBKS) skipper Shreyas Iyer smashed a stunning knock of unbeaten 97 runs off just 42 balls in his side’s opening game of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season against the Gujarat Titans (GT) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Tuesday, March 25. Iyer’s unbeaten 97, along with valuable knocks from Priyansh Arya and Shashank Singh, powered Punjab Kings to a huge total of 243 runs in 20 overs, their second-highest total in IPL history.
Iyer, who was bought for a huge sum of Rs 26.75 crore by Punjab Kings in the IPL 2025 mega auction, went on to repay the faith shown in him by the team management with a stupendous knock. The PBKS skipper looked in sublime control from the word go after arriving at the crease at number three and went on to notch up his highest score in his IPL career.
Iyer smashed 97 off just 42 balls laced with an impressive 9 sixes and five fours, as he made a mockery of the Gujarat Titans’ bowling attack. The PBKS skipper looked in fabulous touch and played some sensational shots across all parts of the ground. While he was in destructive mode against the pacers, Iyer also tackled the likes of Rashid Khan and R Sai Kishore well to top-score for his side.
Shreyas Iyer misses out on his maiden IPL ton closely
Iyer missed out on the chance to notch up his maiden IPL ton closely as he remained stuck on 97 in the final over of his side’s innings. Heading into the final over, Iyer was on 97 off 42 balls and needed just 3 more runs to get to his first IPL century. However, the PBKS skipper showed his selfless side and asked his batting partner Shashank Singh not to worry about the hundred and finish well for the team.
Shashank did his job to perfection as he ended up smashing five boundaries in the final over against Mohammed Siraj to get 23 runs off the over and propel Punjab Kings to 243 runs. However, Shashank’s assault in the last over meant Iyer never got the strike back and thus was not able to score the final three runs required for his century.
Punjab Kings skipper Shreyas Iyer smashed a phenomenal knock of unbeaten 97 off just 42 balls to decimate the Gujarat Titans’ bowling attack and power his team to a huge total of 243 runs in 20 overs. IPL Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
