New Delhi: PV Sindhu withdrew herself from the Indian team for the Badminton Asia Mixed Team Championships with a hamstring issue on Sunday. Indian shuttlers are currently training in Guwahati for the tournament that will be played in China’s Qingdao from February 11-16.

Sindhu suffered the injury during the ongoing training camp and initially wanted to play through pain though scans revealed she needed more time than initially thought to be fit.

“It is with a heavy heart that I share I won’t be travelling with the team for BAMTC 2025. While training on the 4th (February) in Guwahati, I felt a twinge in my hamstring. Despite my efforts to push through with heavy taping for our country, an MRI has revealed that my recovery will take slightly longer than I initially expected,” she said on her social media platform X.

Sans Sindhu, the onus will be on Lakshya Sen, HS Prannoy, and the men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty for a podium finish after claiming bronze in the previous edition.

Injury woes

In recent times, the 29-year-old Sindhu has suffered from multiple injuries. She won her first women’s singles gold medal at the Commnowealth Games in Birmingham in 2022.

But she suffered a stress fracture in her left foot during the CWG tht ruled her out of the remainder of 2022 that forced her to miss the World Championships and the World Tour Finals.

Sindhu said she would cheer from the sidelines as India are drawn with South Korea and Macau in Group D. The Indian team will start their campaign against Macau on February 12, followed by the clash against South Korea the next day.

After a five day camp that began in Guwahati’s National Centre of Excellence on Feb 4, the team flew out to China on Saturday night.
