New Delhi: Indian shuttlers hit the court immediately after reaching Paris as ace shuttler PV Sindhu was spotted taking on the duo of Lakshya Sen and HS Prannoy in training ahead of the start of her campaign. Sindhu is one of the strongest medal contenders for India at the Paris Games and will be looking to become India’s most successful Olympian of all time with a third medal at the Games.

Sindhu has already secured a place among India’s greatest Olympic athletes of all time with two medals under her belt. She won a silver medal at the Rio Olympics in 2016 after going down against Carolina Marin in the final and followed it up with a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics 2020. Sindhu is the only second Indian after Sushil Kumar to have won two individual medals at the Olympics.

The two-time medallist is raring to go for a third in Paris as she took part in an intense practice session against her teammates Lakshya and Prannoy. Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya shared a clip of Sindhu training against the duo in Paris and praised the Indian shuttles for getting down to work ahead of the start of their campaign.

“Inspired to see our shuttlers gearing up and practicing hard to give their best in #ParisOlympics2024! With a team as strong & determined as ours, the hopes & prayers of millions of Indians stand tall with them. Let’s cheer our champions on to victory!” Mandaviya wrote on Twitter.

While Sindhu is the only women’s singles player in India’s badminton squad, Prannoy and Lakshya will compete in men’s singles at the Paris Olympics. It will be the first time in two decades that India will have two members in men’s singles at the Olympics.

Who are India’s medal contenders in badminton?

While Sindhu is one of the favourites to finish on the podium considering her experience and pedigree, Lakshya will also start as a dark horse in men’s singles. Lakshya has shown in the past that he can beat the best on his day and will be hoping to bring a medal home from his maiden Olympics in Paris.

Apart from Sindhu and Lakshya, the men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty are also strong contenders to win a medal at the Paris Games. The men’s doubles pair played key role in India’s Thomas Cup triumph in 2022 and have been in stellar form recently.
