New Delhi: In what comes as a big surprise, Spaniard Rafael Nadal has ascended two spots in the latest ATP rankings list released on Wednesday. Nadal, who retired from tennis two months ago in November, now sits at the 171st spot, just a position behind Britain’s Dan Evans. The ‘King of Clay’ called it quits after a Davis Cup defeat against Botic van de Zandschulp, marking Spain’s loss to the Netherlands.
The 38-year-old announced his decision to retire from tennis after a series of injury concerns which prevented him from showcasing his best abilities on the court. Nadal, in his retirement address, said that it does not make any sense for him to continue playing professional tennis when he knows that his body is not supporting him.
Record 22 Grand Slam titles
In a career spanning over two decades, Nadal bagged a record 22 Grand Slam titles with only two other players, Novak Djokovic (24) and Roger Federer (20) over the 20-plus mark. Popular as the King of Clay, Nadal was a master at the French Open as he bagged a record 14 Roland Garros titles. The Spaniard has won more than 90 singles ATP titles.
Meanwhile, Jack Sinner continues to dominate the charts with his number one position while Alexander Zverev is on the second position. Spanish sensation Carlos Alcaraz holds on to the third position on the ATP charts while Taylor Fritz and Casper Ruud are on the fourth and fifth positions respectively. Serbian giant Novak Djokovic, who had to exit the Australian Open during the semifinal clash due to an injury, is placed on the sixth spot.
Tommy Paul has made his debut in the top-10 of the charts with the American sensation placed on the ninth position, a level above Andrey Rublev who is on the tenth position.
Spaniard Rafael Nadal has climbed the ATP world rankings despite not playing a match in over two months following his retirement from tennis. Tennis Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
