Wayanad: After days of speculations and deliberations within the Congress, it is official that Rahul Gandhi is vacating the Wayanad Loksabha constituency and will retain the Raebareli seat in Uttar Pradesh.
KPCC president K Sudhakaran confirmed it while speaking to the media. “It’s sad that Rahul Gandhi is vacating Wayanad. One should understand that Rahul needs to concentrate for the entire country and cannot confine himself to one place”, said K Sudhakaran.
Rahul Gandhi while addressing the public in Kalpetta had thanked the people of Wayanad for standing beside him for the past five years and said that their support is more valuable than the votes they have polled in favor of him.
“The people of Wayanad had stood behind me for the past five years. Our relationship is more than a voter-MP relationship. I will remember Wayanad till the end of my life”, said Rahul Gandhi during his thanksgiving speech.
The decision to vacate Wayanad seat has now thrown open a number of probable candidates from Kerala including K Muralidharan, the senior Congress leader who has informed earlier that he is not ready to contest from Wayanad after his loss from Thrissur constituency to actor-politician Suresh Gopi.
“I am not in a mood to contest from any seat now and has decided to stay away from public programmes”, said K Muralidharan to the media hours after the election results.
Rahul Gandhi has won in Wayanad seat with an overwhelming majority in 2019 and then in 2024 enjoyed a huge support in the constituency which comprises of parts of Wayanad, Malappuram and Kozhikode. Wayanad is the biggest Loksabha constituency in Kerala which also has a large Christian population.
There was a lot of ambiguity regarding contesting from a second constituency apart from Wayanad as it could lead to adverse results. However, the Congress leader won from both the seats with a comfortable majority.
Congress party is expected to chose a candidate from Wayanad very soon as per party sources
