New Delhi: Roger Binny’s tenure as BCCI president ends next month with his deputy Rajeev Shukla set to take over as the Board chief, multipe reports suggested on Monday.
Former cricketer Binny’s tenure ends on July 19 after he reached the age cap of 70 years. Current vice president Shukla is likely to take over reins on an interim basis for a three-month period.
From 2017 to 2019, CK Khanna had served as the acting BCCI president when the organisation was run for 33 months by Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators.
Binny, a member of India’s 1983 ODI World Cup winning team, succeeded former skipper Sourav Ganguly as the BCCI chief unopposed in 2022.
He turns 70 on July 19 and as the BCCI’s constitution, which is in line with the National Sport Code, a person ceases to be an office bearer if he/she has attained the age of 70 years.
Shukla will host the top post till fresh elections are held at its annual general meeting in September. During the AGM, Shukla can contest for a full-term as the BCCI chief.
“As per convention, the senior most office-bearer takes charge in a such a scenario. He (Shukla) will perform that role until fresh elections are held in September,” a BCCI source told PTI.
Shukla, a veteran cricket administrator, has been the BCCI vice president since 2020, having earlier served as Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association’s secretarry till 2017.
He was also chairman of the IPL till 2018, and is also a Rajya Sabha MP from the Congress party.
All-rounder Binny played a key role in India’s 1983 World Cup triumph under Kapil Dev, claiming a tournament-high 18 wickets in eight matches. He represented the country in 27 Tests and 72 ODIs between 1979 and 1987.
The right armer took a combined 124 wickets during his international career apart from scoring 1459 runs.
Binny was Karnataka State Cricket Association’s president before taking over as the BCCI head and was coach of the Under-19 team that won the ICC World Cup in 2000.
