New Delhi: In a shocking incident, a 56-year-old man died due to a heart attack while performing the role of Lord Rama at a Ramlila in Vishwakarma Nagar of Shahdara. The incident created a buzz on the internet, raising concerns about heart health in India. However, this is not the first case of a sudden heart attack on stage, a similar incident took place in Haryana’s Bhiwani the previous year, when a man died due to a heart attack while performing during a Ramlila. Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are the leading cause of death and disability.
According to the 2023 report, the death rate due to heart attacks has increased from 12.4 million in 1990 to 19.8 million in 2022. Moreover, the risk of heart attack death is higher in India. But how do sudden heart attacks happen, do they give you signals and what are the driving forces behind the spike in cases among youngsters?
Discussing the same Dr Keshava R, senior director, of interventional cardiology, Fortis Hospital, Cunningham Road, Bengaluru, told News9, “The alarming rise in heart attacks among young people can be attributed to a combination of lifestyle, genetic, and environmental factors. Sedentary lifestyles, lack of physical activity, and unhealthy dietary habits, including high consumption of processed foods and sugar, contribute to obesity, hypertension, and high cholesterol, increasing cardiovascular risk.”
Reasons behind rise in sudden heart attacks
According to Dr Keshava, “Stress, anxiety, and depression, exacerbated by social media and pressure to conform to societal expectations, also play a significant role. Additionally, genetic predisposition, family history, and underlying medical conditions, such as diabetes and hypertension, can increase the likelihood of heart attacks in young individuals. The growing trend of smoking, tobacco consumption, and substance abuse further accelerates cardiovascular disease. Environmental factors, including air pollution and exposure to toxins, also contribute to the rising incidence. Moreover, inadequate sleep, poor sleep quality, and irregular sleep patterns disrupt cardiovascular health. The increasing prevalence of metabolic syndrome, characterised by central obesity, high blood pressure, and insulin resistance, is another key factor.”
“Lastly, lack of awareness, inadequate healthcare access, and delayed diagnosis further compound the problem, leading to a surge in heart attacks among young people, often with devastating consequences, emphasizing the need for urgent lifestyle modifications and preventive measures.”
