New Delhi: A historic day for Indian sports as former Indian shooter Raja Randhir Singh was elected as the President of the Olympic Council of Asia. He became the first-ever Indian to take the position. He was named as the first Indian President of the Olympic Council of India at the 44th Olympic Council of Asia General Assembly.
Hon’ble Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, Hon’ble Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare and Hon’ble Union Minister of Chemicals and Fertilizers Shri JP Nadda, Hon’ble Minister of State for Youth Affairs & Sports, Smt. Raksha Nikhil Khadse, and Indian Olympic Association President P T Usha, were also present along with sports leaders from all 45 Asian countries.
Randhir Singh was the sole candidate for the top position and was unanimously elected by the OCA representatives for the top post. The 77-year-old has been the OCA acting president since 2021 and his new tenure will run from 2024 to 2028.
Randhir hails from Patiala and belongs to a family of sportspersons. Both his uncle and father were members of the IOC. His uncle, Maharaja Yadavindra Singh was a Test cricketer and played cricket for India. His father Bhalindra Singh was also a first-class cricketer. Randhir was also a member of the IOC between 2001 and 2014, after which he continued as the honourary member of the global sports body.
‘I promise I will continue to serve Asia’: Raja Randhir Singh
After becoming the President of the Olympic Council of Asia, Randhir thanked everyone for the support and putting his name for the top position. He also promised that he will continue to serve the Asia and Asian athletes to the best of his abilities.
” It is truly an honour and privilege for India to be hosting the General Assembly. I congratulate the Asian National Olympic Committees for the successful performance at the Paris Olympic Games. It presented a powerful and positive image of Asia in the world. There is no doubt that the success of Asia in Paris 2024 was due to the quality of Asian Games in Hangzhou. We promise to assure that the 20th Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan, 2026 will do the same for the next Olympics in Los Angeles in 2028″ Raja Randhir said.
Raja Randhir Singh was unanimously elected by the OCA representatives as the President of the Olympic Council of Asia when he emerged as the sole candidate contesting for the position earlier this year.
