Rape-acquitted Sandeep Lamichhane earns grade A contract from Cricket Association of Nepal

New Delhi: Rape-acquitted Nepal cricketer Sandeep Lamichhane has been awarded a Grade A central contract by Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) for this year. The contract is valid from July 1 to December 31, 2024. The decision was taken by CAN’s central committee meeting on Thursday.

Lamichhane, who is one of country’s prominent cricketers became the first bowler from Nepal to scalp 100 T20I wickets in a recent achievement, which played a big role in him getting a central contract. Earlier, the star cricketer was not offered a central contract as he was accused of rape. However, in May this year, the Patan High court acquitted him in the rape case, clearing all the charges made against him.

Lamichhane denied visa for T20 WC

Ahead of the T20 World Cup 2024, Lamichhane was denied a US visa and missed the first two matches for Nepal, after applying for the same two times. However, he eventually managed to play a couple of games in the Caribbean leg of the showpiece tournament where he displayed his excellent bowling skills and temperament.

The leg-spinner, who experienced a woeful year, became the second-fastest bowler to clinch 100 T20I wickets. He reached to the feat in 54 matches, second only to Afghanistan’s star spinner Rashid Khan who did it in 53 games. Meanwhile, other Nepalese players included in this central contract are Kushal Bhurtel, Aasif Sheikh, Dipendra Singh Airee, Karan KC, Sompal Kami and captain Rohit Paudel.
