New Delhi: Star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja continued his phenomenal run with the ball for India during New Zealand’s second innings as he bagged his second fifer in the game to help the hosts bundle out the Kiwis for 174 runs in their second innings. New Zealand could only amass a lead of 146 runs to set India a target of 147 runs in their second innings to win the third Test between the two teams at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
New Zealand were able to add only three runs on the scoreboard on Day 3 after resuming their second innings on 174/9. Tail-ender Ajaz Patel was the last wicket to fall for the Kiwis after scoring 8 runs off 23 balls. He was dismissed by Jadeja after getting caught by Akash Deep at deep midwicket on the penultimate ball of the 46th over.
Jadeja went on to complete his second fifer in the game with Patel’s wicket as he finished with excellent figures of 5/55 off his 13.5 overs in New Zealand’s second innings. The left-arm spinner had earlier picked up a 5-wicket haul during the Kiwis’s first innings in the Test match. Jadeja was well supported by spin partner R Ashwin, who picked up three wickets in the 2nd innings.
Will Young scores fighting fifty for New Zealand
No.3 batter Will Young was the only silver lining for New Zealand in an otherwise disappointing batting display from the visitors. Young scored a fighting half-century to ensure the Kiwis comfortably crossed the 150-run mark in their second innings to set up a challenging target for India in their second innings.
Will slammed a gritty knock of 51 runs and combined with the likes of Daryl Mitchell (21) and Glenn Phillips (26) to help New Zealand post 174 runs on the board in their second innings. New Zealand will be hopeful of defend the low-key total as 163 is the highest target chased by any team in the 4th innings of a Test match at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
South Africa achieved the feat against India in 2000 when they clean swept the hosts 2-0 in a two-match Test series.
