New Delhi: The Enzo Fernandez fiasco reaches new heights, with River Plate fans singing racist chants during a presentation. The fans echoed a racist and transphobic chant about the French team in support of Enzo Fernandez’s controversial views as the Chelsea player was being honoured by the Argentine club for his contribution to the nation’s victory in the 2024 Copa America.
Enzo Fernandez live-streamed several Argentinian players singing an offensive song that mocks France for having players of African heritage in their squad. The 23-year-old’s Chelsea team-mate, Wesley Fofana, and many others condemned the act as “uninhibited racism”, and others have since unfollowed the South American on social media. However, the midfielder posted an apology letter across social media platforms, but the unsolicited support from the Argentine Vice-President, Victoria Villarruel, who publicly said that the Argentinians won’t be intimidated by ‘colonist country’ France, and fully supported Enzo’s chant makes the fiasco worsen.
Victoria Villaruel said on X: “No colonialist country is going to intimidate us for a song on the pitch or for telling the truths they don’t want to admit,”.
“Argentina is a sovereign and free country. We never had colonies or second-class citizens. We have never imposed our way of life on anyone.”
Now, the River Plate fans have come in support of the midfielder by singing racist chants during the award presentation. Watch:

FIFA and other authority bodies have a big task at hand to make sure this fiasco does not get into the wrong section of history. As fans over the two countries continue the chaotic verbal war, a peaceful resolution must be sought and accountability must be attained by Enzo Fernandez and others responsible for the situation.
