New Delhi: India’s tennis veteran Rohan Bopanna was knocked out of the French Open 2025 with his Czech partner Adam Pavlásek as they lost to second seeds Harri Heliövaara and Henry Patten in Round 3 of the men’s doubles on Sunday. The unseeded Indo-Czech pair fought tooth and nail at Court 14 in the pre-quarterfinals, but was ultimately routed 2-6, 6-7(5) by Heliövaara from Finland and British player Patten, ranked three and four in the world, respectively.
In the opening set, the second seeds zoomed to a 5-1 lead with a double break. The Finnish player served out the set at love and finished the game with an overhead smash while intercepting a return. In the second set, Bopanna had made a solid start as he held without losing a point on his serve. Meanwhile, Briton Patten, a left-handed player, also came out all guns blazing, as he sent down some powerful and measured angled serves.
Bopanna and Pavlásek got an opening as they were at 2-3 when Patten began game six with a double fault and lost another point to go down 0-30, but he ultimately reeled off four straight points to rub off the danger. No break of serve came in, and eventually the second set went into a tie-breaker in which the second seeds prevailed as Heliövaara found a stunning service return winner on first match point itself.
India’s FO campaign ends as Yuki Bhambri gets knocked out
Until Saturday, India’s hopes in the Roland-Garros were with men’s doubles contestants Bopanna and Bhambri, but as Bopanna was routed in the third round, Bhambri on Court 7 also lost his pre-quarterfinal with American partner Robert Galloway, only a couple of hours later on Sunday. The Indian-American pair played their Round 3 clash against ninth seeds Christian Harrison and Evan King from the United States and were defeated 6-4, 6-4 in straight sets.
Two other Indians – Rithvik Bollipali and N. Sriram Balaji, too, battled in the men’s doubles category at the French Open 2025 but were defeated in the first and second rounds, respectively.
Meanwhile, in the Junior Championship, India’s exciting prospect for the future, Manas Dhamne, bowed out after going down 5-7, 3-6 to fellow American qualifier Ronit Karki. Dhamne, a 17-year-old, had entered the main draw as a qualifier but couldn’t play to his potential on Sunday.
