New Delhi: Team India defeated South Africa by 7 runs in the T20 World Cup final and ended the 11-year ICC trophy drought. The Men in Blue remained undefeated in the tournament and Rohit Sharma became the first captain to win the T20 World Cup without losing any match.
Rohit also became the oldest Indian captain to win the ICC tournament. Rohit played a crucial role in India’s winning run and was the leading run-scorer of the team. He scored 257 runs in 8 matches at an average of 36. The Indian captain now sits at the top of the list of captain with the highest win percentage in the ICC tournament (min. 20 matches). Rohit led India to the semi-final of the T20 World Cup and the final of the World Test Championship and ODI World Cup before winning the T20 World Cup trophy.
He now has a win percentage of 84.6 in ICC tournaments. Former Australian skipper Ricky Ponting is on the second spot with a 78.4 win percentage. Aaron Finch is at third place with a win percentage of 75. Indian Captain Sourav Ganguly at fourth place with a 72.7 win percentage and MS Dhoni at fifth spot with a 70.7 win percentage.
Ricky Ponting won two ODI World Cups, two Champions Trophy titles with the Australian team and is one of the greatest captains in the history of cricket. MS Dhoni led India to a T20 World Cup victory in 2007, ODI World Cup in 2011, and Champions Trophy in 2013 and is the only captain to win all three ICC trophies in white ball cricket.
Seniors to play in Champions Trophy 2025
Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja announced their retirement from the T20I format but BCCI Secretary Jay Shah has confirmed that Team India will participate in the Champions Trophy 2025 with senior players.
“I would want India to win all the titles & the way this team is progressing, our target is to win the WTC & Champions Trophy, seniors will be there” Jay Shah told PTI.
