New Delhi: Not only head coach Rahul Dravid, India skipper Rohit Sharma also offered to take lesser amount from his share for the team’s support staff to get a decent amount of the bonus.
After India won the T20 World Cup, the BCCI announced on July 1 a Rs 125 crore bonus for the players, coaching and support staffs. The captain and coach were decided to get Rs 5 crore each.
The rest of Dravid’s technical support staff of batting coach Vikram Rathour, bowling coach Paras Mhambrey and fielding coach T Dilip were set to get Rs 2.5 crore while some support staff members including throwdown specialist, analysts, masseuse, physio and others were expected to get a lot less.
Dravid relinquished a bonus of Rs 2.5 crore to take the same prize money as the rest of his support staff. Now a report in Dainik Jagran suggests that Rohit demanded equal play for the rest of the support staff as well and was willing to forego a big chunk of his bonus money.
Rohit’s insistence on equal pay for the rest of the support staff helped them get Rs 2 crore each. Though it was not revealed for which particular member he was willing to take the cut but his stance forced the BCCI to distribute Rs 2 crore each to strength and conditioning coaches, physios, analysts, and others.
The BCCI gave the winning team a felicitation at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium where the Rs 125 crore cheque was handed over. The team was also invited to a breakfast pary at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official residence in Delhi.
As earlier announced, Dravid has since left his position with the BCCI roping in Gautam Gambhir as his successor. Rathour and Mhambrey are also set to leave with either of Zaheer Khan and L Balaji tipped to become the next bowling coach.
Dilip is reported to carry on as the fielding coach with Gambhir referring Abhishek Nayar to be the batting coach. Gambhir will take charge of the team in the forthcoming Sri Lanka tour.
