New Delhi: Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma revealed that he felt alive again only after India lifted the T20 World Cup in Barbados in June this year. The Men in Blue defeated South Africa by seven runs in the final to lift their second World T20 title, first since winning the inaugural edition in 2007.
The path was never simple given the fact that India were playing an ICC event just seven months after a heartbreaking defeat to Australia in the final of the ICC World Cup 2023 on home soil. Rohit suffered two major defeats in his captaincy tenure in the World Cup scenario. The loss to Australia further dented his credentials after India exited in a humiliating manner from the 2022 T20 World Cup in Adelaide.
While speaking at the launch of his academy Rashin, Karjat, in the Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra state, the Indian skipper expressed his relief on winning the showpiece event this year.
“For us, winning the World Cup was the biggest goal for 3-4 months that we had to win it. After winning the World Cup, I felt alive again,” he said, as reported by news agency PTI.
Rohit Sharma plans to make India’s next Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill from his academy
A huge crowd thronged at Rohit’s academy inauguration event. The anchor also persuaded the crowd to ask Rohit to continue his captaincy as the team should add more World Cup under his leadership. According to PTI’s report, the 37-year-old Indian cricketer attempted to speak Marathi, which is the regional language of Maharashtra and also signed a few autographs for his fans.
The Indian opener promised the crowd that the next generation of players will hail from his academy, taking the name of some of his teammates in his speech.
“We are starting our cricket academy here and I will hope that the next Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill and Jasprit Bumrah will emerge from here,” he added.
Rohit recently led India to Test series sweep against Bangladesh 2-0 in Chennai and Kanpur. He will lead the side next when they face New Zealand in the first of the three Tests in Bengaluru, starting on October 16.
