New Delhi: Team India skipper Rohit Sharma and star batters Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shreyas Iyer are set to miss Mumbai’s next match against Meghalaya in the ongoing Ranji Trophy 2024-25. Rohit made his Ranji Trophy comeback after a decade when he featured in Mumbai’s last game against Jammu and Kashmir at the Sharad Pawar Cricket Academy in BKC last week.
However, the Indian skipper endured a poor outing as his woeful run with the bat continued in the match. Rohit was dismissed cheaply on 6 runs in Mumbai’s first innings before managing only 28 runs in their second innings. The senior India batter’s much-awaited Ranji comeback was spoiled further after Jammu and Kashmir handed Mumbai a shock 5-wicket defeat in the match.
Jaiswal too failed to impress as he returned with scores of 4 and 26 in the two innings while Iyer managed 11 and 17 runs in the two innings. The trio was expected to continue featuring for Mumbai in their final league match against Meghalaya which is set to be played at the BKC from Thursday, January 30. However, they are reportedly unlikely to play.
Why will Rohit, Jaiswal and Iyer miss Mumbai’s next Ranji match?
As per a report in the Times of India, the trio will be unavailable for Mumbai’s next game against Meghalaya. A BCCI source revealed that Rohit, Jaiswal and Iyer will attend BCCI’s Naman Annual Awards in Mumbai on Saturday, February 01 before heading to Nagpur where they are expected to report for a camp in Nagpur ahead of the start of the three-match ODI series against England.
“Rohit, Jaiswal and Iyer are all likely to attend the BCCI’s Naman Annual awards in Mumbai on February 1. Next day (February 2), they are supposed to report for a short camp to Nagpur before the three-match ODI series against England,” a BCCI source was quoted as saying by the Times of India.
Apart from Rohit, Jaiswal and Iyer, all-rounder Shivam Dube will also miss the match against Meghalaya as he has already joined the Indian team in their ongoing T20I series against England. Dube was called up as a replacement for injured Rinku Singh.
Can Mumbai qualify for Ranji Trophy knockouts?
42-time champions Mumbai have a slim chance of making it to the knockout stage of the Ranji Trophy 2024-25 after their shock defeat against Jammu and Kashmir in their last game. Mumbai, who has 22 points, need to beat Meghalaya outright and hope Baroda lose against J&K to stand a chance of progressing to the knockouts.
Iyer’s absence will be a huge blow for Mumbai ahead of the crucial clash against Meghalaya. The star batter is the leading run-getter for Mumbai in the ongoing Ranji season with 480 runs in five matches at an average of 68.57. However, the trio’s absence is likely to pave way for in-form young opener Ayush Mhatre and all-rounder Suryansh Shedge to return to Mumbai’s playing XI against Meghalaya.
