New Delhi: Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has reportedly told his players he will be staying at the club next season, and has asked forward Alejandro Garnacho to find a new club. Amorim’s future came under intense scrutiny after United suffered a 1-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final earlier this week, to end the season trophyless while failing to qualify for Europe next season.
United have endured one of their worst-ever seasons in recent memory as they are currently languishing in the 16th spot on the Premier League points table, set for their worst finish since they were relegated from the English top-flight in the 1973-74 season. United have managed only 39 points from 37 matches so far this season, enduring a shocking 18 defeats to remain just two spots above the relegation zone.
The Red Devils had a chance to redeem their disastrous season with a European title, but failed to do so as they slipped to a dismal defeat against Spurs in the Europa League final in Bilbao. United are currently 16th in the Premier League with their final game against Aston Villa on Sunday, May 25. However, despite their horror season, Amorim has retained the confidence of the United board.
As per The Athletic, Amorim has informed the Manchester United squad members that he will be in charge of the club next season. The Portuguese manager had publicly stated that he is ready to leave the club without asking for any compensation if the United board and the fans believe he is not the right man to be in charge of the club going forward.
However, as per The Athletic, Amorim has insisted that he wouldn’t quit the club on his own despite the club recording their worst-ever finish in a Premier League campaign under him. Amorim took charge at United in November last year from Sporting, after United sacked Erik Ten Hag following a poor start to the season. However, the Portuguese failed to help the clib stage a comeback as they kept slipping further with one defeat after another in the Premier League.
Garnacho told to leave Manchester United
The report further adds that Amorim has also told Garnacho to leave the club as he is not considering the Argentinian forward in his plans for the next season. This comes after Garnacho expressed his frustrations with Amorim and the club publicly following United’s loss to Spurs in the Europa League final.
Speaking to the reporters after the final, Garnacho, who came on as a substitute in the final, called United’s season ‘s***’ and expressed his disappointment and getting to play only 20 minutes in the final after playing a key role in helping the club reach the final with regular appearances in the Europa League.
“It’s hard for everyone. The season was s***, both now losing the final tonight, and in the league, where we didn’t beat anyone, that’s the truth. Up until the final, I’ve played every round, and today to play 20 minutes… I don’t know. I’m going to try to enjoy the summer and see what happens after,” Garnacho told the reporters.
This is not the first time Garnacho’s actions have infuriated Amorim. The 20-year-old forward was dropped from United’s squad for the Manchester Derby earlier this season, along with Marcus Rashford, but later returned to the squad after managing to win the manager’s trust. Rashford, on the other hand, was sent to Aston Villa on loan after a long spell on the sidelines despite being fit.
Garnacho had also reacted poorly to being substituted in the Premier League clash against Ipswich Town, following which Amorim confirmed that the forward apologised for his actions by paying for a team dinner. Garnacho was on the verge of leaving United in the January transfer window when Napoli came calling.
However, United turned down the Italian club’s offer for their academy product to keep him at the club. Garnacho, who made his senior-team debut for United in 2022, has so far played 144 matches for the club, and has scored 26 goals while producing 22 assists.
