New Delhi: Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim reportedly wanted to leave the club in January this year after a disastrous start to his spell. However, the shock exit was avoided after Amorim was talked out of resigning by the club’s associates. Amorim had taken over as the new head coach of Manchester United from Erik Ten Hag in November last year.

He joined the Premier League giants from Sporting CP after enjoying a successful spell at the Portuguese club. Amorim joined United during a challenging time and was handed the task of reviving the club’s campaign after their disappointing start to the season. However, Amorim failed to do so as he ended up managing only one win in his first 8 games in charge of United.

As per ESPN, Amorim was set to quit the Manchester United job after the club’s 3-1 defeat against Brighton at home, just two months after joining from Sporting. However, Manchester United’s associates talked him out of the idea. Amorim was reassured by the United board, including CEO Omar Berrada, that he would be backed in the market to turn around the club’s fortunes.

Since the defeat against Brighton, things haven’t improved a lot as Manchester United have lost as many as 13 out of 25 matches under Amorim this season. United have suffered a staggering 18 defeats in the league this season, their worst record since the Premier League’s inception in 1992. United are currently winless in their last eight Premier League matches, with manager Amorim ’embarrassed’ by the results.

Ruben Amorim has started to love the challenge of reviving Manchester United

According to ESPN, Amorim wanted to leave the club after continuously questioning himself and the club’s abilities to rebuild the squad to his satisfaction. However, on being reassured by the club’s hierarchy, he decided to stay on and has recently started to ‘love’ the challenge of reviving United’s fortunes going forward.

Despite Amorim’s insecurities, the Manchester United board remains convinced that the ex-Sporting manager is the right man for the tough job. Amorim will have a chance to help United end their dismal season on a high by lifting the Europa League title. United will take on fellow strugglers Tottenham Hotspur in the final of the Europa League 2024-25 on Thursday.

The Red Devils will be hoping to redeem their abysmal season with a European trophy in the end. United last won a European title when they lifted the Europa League under Jose Mourinho in 2017. United won the FA Cup last season to clinch a trophy despite enduring a difficult campaign, and will be hoping to do the same this year.
