New Delhi: Saudi Arabia has confirmed that alcohol will not be allowed at the 2034 FIFA World Cup, maintaining a decades-old ban. The country has not permitted alcohol sales since 1952 and will not make exceptions for the tournament.

This means fans will not be able to buy alcohol inside stadiums or at official fan zones, similar to the restrictions in neighbouring Qatar during the 2022 World Cup. Saudi officials have stated that visitors must respect the country’s cultural and legal framework while attending the tournament.

Despite this strict stance on alcohol, Saudi Arabia has assured that LGBTQ fans will be welcomed. Officials involved in the tournament’s planning have said that all visitors will be treated with respect, emphasising that the World Cup is a global event open to everyone.

While Saudi law remains strict regarding LGBTQ rights, organisers have pointed to previous international sporting events held in the country as examples of safe and inclusive experiences for fans of all backgrounds.

FIFA’s decision and ongoing human rights concerns

Saudi Arabia has faced scrutiny over its human rights record, including restrictions on LGBTQ rights and treatment of migrant workers. Critics argue that hosting the World Cup allows the kingdom to “sportswash” its image by focusing on football rather than human rights issues. However, Saudi authorities have pushed back against this criticism, insisting that their goal is to host a successful tournament that respects both international visitors and local traditions.

Stadium construction is already underway, with 15 new or refurbished venues planned by 2032. Human rights groups have raised concerns about the treatment of migrant workers, pointing to past abuses in the region.

Amnesty International has warned that without strong protections, labourers could face exploitation. FIFA has not commented on potential labour reforms but remains committed to hosting the tournament in Saudi Arabia.

With alcohol banned but LGBTQ fans assured of their safety, the 2034 World Cup will present a unique experience for travelling supporters. As preparations continue, questions remain about how Saudi Arabia will balance its cultural policies with the expectations of global football fans.
