The loco pilot of the freight train, which was travelling at 78 kmph, attempted to engage the emergency brakes upon spotting the Kanchenjunga Express ahead but was unable to prevent the collision. This is detailed in a probe report by the Chief Commissioner of Railway Safety (CCRS), which reconstructs the final moments before last month’s tragic train accident that resulted in the deaths of at least 10 people. On June 17, the DN GFCJ freight train collided with the Sealdah-bound Kanchenjunga Express from the rear in the Darjeeling district. Anil Kumar, the freight train’s loco pilot, died instantly, while the assistant loco pilot, Manu Kumar, survived and is currently recuperating at a railway hospital in Assam. The report states that Kumar noticed the express train 284 meters ahead and applied the emergency brakes, but it was too late. The trains collided at a speed of 40 kmph.
On Wednesday, the Delhi High Court reserved its judgment on the petition filed by jailed Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, challenging his arrest and remand by the Central Bureau of Investigation in the excise policy case. The court also reserved its decision regarding Kejriwal’s request for interim bail.
