Union Earth Sciences Minister Jitendra Singh announced on Sunday that India is poised to become the sixth country globally to launch its deep-sea mission. Leading a meeting to review the ministry’s 100-day action plan, Singh expressed pride in India’s progress towards this significant achievement, highlighting the nation’s rare distinction among global peers. Singh underscored the importance of the deep-sea mission not only for mineral exploration but also for advancing ocean sciences, studying marine flora and fauna, and conserving marine biodiversity. Emphasising the potential of a resilient blue economy, he urged institutes to focus on empowering communities dependent on ocean resources and energy for their livelihoods. Singh commended the National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT) for its efforts in developing Matsyayaan 6000, a deep-sea submersible capable of diving up to 6,000 meters. This technological advancement positions India to make significant strides in ocean exploration and scientific research.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi criticised India’s Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) on Sunday, labelling them as a “black box” that lacks transparency and scrutiny. He raised concerns about the integrity of India’s electoral process, highlighting the absence of openness in EVM scrutiny. Additionally, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, an ally of the Congress, echoed these sentiments, questioning the credibility of EVMs. He went further to demand that all forthcoming elections should revert to using traditional ballot papers, citing doubts over the fairness of electronic voting.
 A group of farmers staged a protest at the Ladhowal toll plaza in Ludhiana, Punjab, in response to a recent increase in toll fees. Led by the Bharatiya Kisan Mazdoor Union and the Bharatiya Kisan Union, the farmers pressured authorities into waiving toll charges for commuters during the protest on Sunday.
Amid the controversy surrounding the NEET medical entrance exam, former HRD minister Kapil Sibal called for a Supreme Court-appointed investigation into allegations of irregularities. He also urged the government to engage in comprehensive consultations with all states regarding the future conduct of the examination. In an interview with PTI, the Independent Rajya Sabha MP and former Congress leader criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his silence on the matter, saying that if the testing system in any examination becomes corrupt then it is “not really neat for the PM to remain silent”.
