Kolkata: Will the Indian stock market indices open lower today, June 12, 2025? It seems likely since all the global cues appear negative. All the three major US stock indices ended lower yesterday. This morning all the major Asian indices were trading in the red zone. So was GIFT Nifty.
While Dow Jones ended 0.36% down on June 11, S&P500 was 0.27% down and Nasdaq closed 0.50% in the red on Wednesday. London’s FTSE ended in the green but French CAC and German index DAX both ended in the red. On Thursday morning GIFT Nifty was trading in the red. Apart from Straits Times and KOSPI, all the major Asian indices including Nikkei, Shanghai Composite, Hang Seng, Taiwan Weighted were trading in the red.
Sensex, Nifty on Wednesday
Following a volatile session, the Indian markets managed to end in the green zone taking cues from other Asian markets. Progress in US-China trade talks was another driver. FMCG, Power, PSU Bank indices were down 0.5%-1%, while Oil & Gas, Pharma, IT were up 0.5%-1.2%. The BSE Mid Cap index lost by 0.12% while the Small Cap index gained 0.06%. At close of trade, Sensex was up 123.42 points or 0.15% and settled at 82,515.14, while Nifty was up 37.15 points or 0.15% to close at 25,141.40.
In the Sensex pack the major gainers included HCL Tech (3.22%), Infosys (2.16%) and Tech Mahindra (1.74%) while the major laggards were Power Grid (1.89%), Adani Ports (1.24%) and IndusInd Bank (1.21%). Of the 4180 stocks traded on BSE, 2227 stocks advanced, 1821 stocks declined while 132 remained unchanged.
The World Bank forecast that India’s growth will be a bit sower at 6.3% in FY26 compared with 6.5% in the previous year. The forecast for growth in FY2025/26 has been downgraded by 0.4% point in comparison to January projections. Global trade barriers can impact India’s external sector negatively.
