New Delhi: Serie A president Ezio Simonielli recently discussed his desire to close the transfer window in the top five leagues before the new season begins. The English Premier League’s initiative to close the summer transfer window in mid-August instead of the end of the month was struggling to gain support from other European leagues.

But now Serie A has stepped ahead and backed the proposal. Simonielli told Marca, “We want the window to close before the start of the season, just like in the Premier League. However, La Liga will not close earlier than August 31, and it seems the same will happen in the Bundesliga and Ligue 1. We need unanimity for this to work, and that’s not easy to achieve.”

He insisted that we need to adapt to align with other major European championships. The Premier League has argued that its proposal is more logical and practical as it would prevent the chaos of new players joining the squads after the season has already begun. The disruption is inevitable when transfers continue to get finalised during their opening league fixtures.

When did the 2024 summer transfer window open and close?

The Premier League’s summer transfer window opened on Friday, June 14, 2024, and closed on Friday, August 30, 2024, 13 days after the league season had already begun while their counterparts opened the transfer window a little later with La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A and Ligue 1 all kicked off on Monday 1 July. After a discrepancy between the Premier League and the rest of Europe’s opening dates the top five leagues agreed to shut the window on the same day.

Well, the closing calendars agreed upon syncing the closing date last year but will they agree upon closing the summer window before the start of the league needs to be seen.
