Shaheedi Diwas: Know about Yaduvanshi Ahir King Rao Tula Ram who fought the British

New Delhi: Every year on September 23, Shaheedi Diwas is observed in honour of freedom fighter and Yaduvanshi Ahir King Rao Tula Ram of Rewari. He fought in the 1857 Indian Rebellion and the Shaheedi Diwas is observed on his death anniversary. Today, people pay tribute to freedom fighters who fought for our nation and sacrificed their lives. On the occasion of honouring our freedom fighters’ martyrdom, we look at the life of Rao Tula Ram.

Who was Rao Tula Ram?

Rao Tula Ram Singh was a Yaduvanshi Ahir King or Rewari chieftain. Notably, he played a leading role in the 1857 Indian rebellion in Haryana and he is hailed as a state hero there. Born on December 9, 1825, Rao lost his father when he was very young.

Rao Tula Ram played a crucial role in Haryana during the 1857 Indian rebellion. On May 17, 1857, he deposed the local tehsildar with the help of his cousin, Rao Gopal Dev, and 400 to 500 followers and occupied Rewari. He raised an army which comprised about 5000 soldiers. Moreover, he established a workshop to manufacture guns and other ammunition. To help the rebel forces in Delhi, he sent Rs 45,000 with a huge amount of essential commodities.

Rao Tula Ram and the battle against the British forces

On November 16, 1857, the forces of Rao under the leadership of his cousin Rao Kirshan Singh fought the British in Nasibpur and massacred the British forces and several British officers were killed. The British responded strongly and successfully.

Rao Tula Ram joined hands with Tantia Tope and his forces for one year in Rajasthan. However, the British defeated Tantia Tope’s forces in the battle of Sikar in Rajasthan. Rao Tula Ram was forced to leave India and ask the Shah of Iran for help. He also appealed to the ruler of Afghanistan Dost Mohammad Khan and Alexander II, the Emperor of Russia to help in the ousting of the British colonial power from India. His property was confiscated by the British in 1859 and in 1877, his title was given to his son Rao Yudhister Singh. He passed away on September 23, 1863, in Kabul just at the age of 38.
