New Delhi: Shreyas Iyer silenced his critics with a blazing double century in the ongoing Ranji Trophy match between Mumbai and Odisha on Thursday at the BKC Ground in Mumbai. Iyer converted his second consecutive Ranji century into a third First-Class double-hundred also registering his career-best First-Class score in the process.
Iyer bettered his previous best FC score of 202 against a visiting Australia team ahead of the 2017-18 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Mumbai.
His first double-century was also in Mumbai in 2015 when he punished Punjab bowlers in a Ranji match.
Iyer completed his century on Day 1, reaching the milestone in just 101 balls. By stumps, Iyer had amassed 152 runs with the help of 18 fours and four sixes. Iyer’s partner Siddhesh Lad played the second fiddle, with his 116 off 234 balls ensuring Mumbai took total control at Stumps on Day 1.

On Day 2, Iyer raced to his double century in only 201 balls courtesy of 22 fours and eight sixes.
Iyer was eventually dismissed for 233 off 228 balls with the help of 24 boundaries and nine sixes.
With his blazing double century, Iyer has sent a strong message to the selectors. He would hope selectors take notice of the sensational knock and open the doors for his return to the Indian Test team. When England visited India earlier this year, he was part of the squad. But a back issue post-surgery forced him to opt out of the series.

The out-of-favour India batter, who was not granted a central contract by the Board of Control of Cricket in India (BCCI), has worked his way back into form. Iyer scored a century in Mumbai’s previous match against Maharashtra in the second round, reaching the three-figure mark after three years. Before the ton against Maharashtra, Iyer’s last ton had come on his Test debut against New Zealand in Kanpur in November 2021.
