In a press conference held in Brazil, Amitabh Kant, India’s G20 Sherpa, highlighted key outcomes of the 11th G20 Summit attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Kant described the summit as a “fruitful engagement” and emphasized the significance of the discussions and commitments made by global leaders.
One of the standout achievements of the summit was the unified stance taken by G20 leaders against global hunger. “The declaration has been passed, which demonstrates unity against hunger,” Kant said. Leaders were invited to participate in initiatives addressing hunger and sustainable development.
Emphasis on climate and energy
The summit also placed a “huge emphasis on climate and energy,” according to Kant. Prime Minister Modi reiterated India’s ambitious commitment to renewable energy and highlighted the country’s efforts to transition towards sustainable energy solutions.
“The PM spoke on hunger and sustainable development. He emphasized India’s efforts for energy and reiterated our commitment to renewable energy,” Kant said.
What else was discussed?
Traditional medicine was another focal point of the discussions. Leaders acknowledged its potential role in addressing global health challenges. Modi also stressed the importance of speeding up the implementation of G20 initiatives to achieve impactful results.
The ongoing conflict in the Middle East was also discussed, underlining the summit’s comprehensive approach to global challenges.
Amitabh Kant concluded the briefing by applauding the ambition displayed by PM Modi during the summit, saying it reflects India’s proactive role in shaping global discussions.
A look at PM Modi’s statement
“At the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro today, I spoke on a topic which is very important for the future of the planet- Sustainable Development and Energy Transition. I reiterated India’s steadfast commitment to the Sustainable Development Agenda. Over the past decade, India has undertaken numerous initiatives in sectors like housing, water resources, energy and sanitation which have contributed to a more sustainable future,” PM Modi stated on X.
“We in India, guided by our cultural values, have been the first to fulfil the Paris Agreement commitments ahead of schedule. Building on this, we are accelerating towards more ambitious goals in sectors like renewable energy. Our effort of the world’s largest solar rooftop programme is an example of the same,” he stated.
“India is sharing its successful initiatives with the Global South, focussing on affordable climate finance and technology access. From launching the Global Biofuels Alliance and promoting ‘One Sun One World One Grid’ to planting a billion trees under ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’, we continue to work actively towards sustainable progress,” he added.
