‘Simply Not Cricket’: Sunil Gavaskar slams Virat Kohli again over Sam Konstas incident

New Delhi: The legendary Sunil Gavaskar has once again lashed out at Team India star Virat Kohli over his altercation with Australian opener Sam Konstas during the 4th Test of the recently concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 in Melbourne. Kohli intentionally bumped into Konstas while he was batting in the middle in what was his debut Test match for Australia.

The incident went viral in no time, sparking a massive debate on social media. Many felt it was an unnecessary act from Kohli as the star India batter was criticised for his on-field antics. Gavaskar was also among the ones to slam Kohli for his behaviour as the legendary batter felt there was no provocation from the Australian youngster’s end.

Konstas went on to enjoy a memorable debut in Melbourne as he slammed a quickfire 60 in Australia’s first innings, taking on Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah. Bumrah later exacted his revenge on Konstas as he cleaned him up cheaply on just 8 runs in the second innings of the Test match. Later in the series, Konstas was again involved in verbal duels with Bumrah and made gestures, taking a dig at Kohli.

Reacting to Kohli’s incident with Konstas from the 4th Test, Gavaskar said Indians are not shy from retaliating if provoked by the opposition but Kohli’s actions were not needed as there was no provocation from Konstas’ end.

“That said, what Kohli did with the shoulder bump is simply not cricket. Indians aren’t shy to retaliate if provoked, but here the provocation was simply not there. The one thing that players learn with experience is that it is futile to try and get back at the crowds, who have come to have a good time, so booing players is never personal but just a way to entertain themselves,” Gavaskar wrote in his column for The Age.
