Singapore Open 2025: Satwik-Chirag crash out after losing to Malaysia’s Chia-Soh in semi-final

New Delhi: Satwiksairaj Rankiredddy and Chirag Shetty’s dream run at the Singapore Open 2025 came to an end on Saturday with a defeat against the veteran Malaysian pair of Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik in the men’s doubles semi-final. The Indian men’s doubles pair of Satwik and Chirag were beaten 19-21, 21-10, 21-18 by the world no.3 Malaysian pair, who came from a game down to clinch the semi-final.

Satwik and Chirag stormed into the semi-finals after defeating the world no.1 Malaysian pair of Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin in straight games in the quarter-finals of the Singapore Open Super 750 tournament. However, they couldn’t get past their long-time rivals Chia and Soh, who extended their win-loss record to 10-3 against the Indians with a hard-fought win in the semi-finals.

There was not much to separate the two pairs at the start of the first game, as they were locked at 18-18. However, Satwik-Chirag raised their attacking game and held their nerves to take the first game 21-19. Chia and Soh raced to a massive lead of 1-8 in the second game after making an exceptional start as Satwik and Chirag made some unforced errors, owing to a lack of communication.

With an 11-5 lead at the interval, the Malaysians were cruising in the second game as they dominated the proceedings. Chia-Sho extended their lead to 10-19, making full use of the lack of coordination between the Indian pair before eventually winning the game 10-21 to force the match into a decisive third game. There was no relief for the Indian pair in the third game.

Though they bounced back well to keep things level at 4-4, the Malaysian pair soon raced into a 14-9 lead to regain control of the match. In the dying moments of the semi-final, Satwik and Chirag produced some of the finest doubles badminton to save seven straight match points to bring the equation down to 20-18. However, Chir and Soh took the game 21-18 eventually to win the semi-final.
