Size matters! French pole vaulter’s bulge costs him medal at Olympics, video goes viral – WATCH

New Delhi: Does size matter? Well, it does if you are Anthony Ammirati. The French pole vaulter missed out on a medal at the Paris Olympics 2024 in the most unfortunate manner possible after a bulge cost him during the final of the men’s pole vault on Saturday. A clip of the moment went viral on social media, making Ammirati an overnight sensation but not for the reasons he would have wanted to.

The incident happened during the Frenchman’s third attempt in the men’s pole vault final. The 21-year-old was trying to clear a height of 5.70m, however, he failed bizarrely after his crotch came in contact with the crossbar leading to his fall. In the video going viral on social media, Ammirati’s leg initially disturbed the crossbar before his bulge led to its fall.

The video has gone viral on social media, sparking mixed reactions from fans. Many have sympathised with the French pole vaulter for losing out on a chance to win a medal due to his penis. While it cost him a medal at the Olympics, the viral moment has reportedly led to an increase in Amirati’s social media followers.

Glad I can make people laugh: Ammirati

Even the commentators struggled to describe the situation as they were left awkwardly silent after witnessing what had unfolded. Ammirati ended up finishing in the 12th position in the final with a combined score of 5.60. The U20 World Champion, who was only competing in pole vault at the Games, said it was disappointing to lose in the manner that he did.

“It’s a big disappointment. I’m a bit gutted,” said Ammirati as per the French Athletic Federation.

When asked about the bulge incident, Ammirati took it in a light-hearted way and said he was pleased that he could make people happy and smile about something.

“I’m just glad I can make people smile and laugh. And who knows, maybe this will be the start of something amazing,” said the French pole vaulter.

It was world record holder Mondo Duplantis of Sweden who topped the qualification round by clearing 5.75m in his first attempt. He was followed by Norway’s Guttormsen Sondre and Greece’s Karalis Emmanouli in the second and third spots, respectively.
