Soil from village pond, lab test in IIT: How Kanpur Test pitch was curated?

Kanpur: Ahead of the second Test between India and Bangladesh, a lot of talks have centred around the pitch. Will it help the spinners or will it assist the fast bowlers? The suspense surrounding the Green Park track has added more spice to the must-win match for Bangladesh, who are desperate to save the series with a famous win.

India, meanwhile, will look to continue their winning run and seal another series victory at home. The second and final Test of the series will start on September 27, Friday with Test cricket making a return to the iconic Green Park Stadium after three years.

Ahead of the much-awaited clash Shiv Kumar, the curator, gave a hint about the pitch’s behaviour. Kumar revealed that the Green Park track will have something for everyone and is expected to assist the pacers early on in the first two sessions and offer help for the spinners on the last three days.

Fascinating details emerge about Green Park pitch

Amidst all the pitch talks, some fascinating details have emerged about the curation of the pitch.

According to a report in PTI,  the black-soil soil used to curate the pitch was transported from a village pond in the Unnao district situated approximately 23 km from Kanpur.

The report further revealed the soil used for pitch curation is only found near the pond. An official of the Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association said that Green Park curators have been using this soil for several years. The soil was first taken to a lab at IIT Kanpur for testing. After passing the tests, it was used to create the pitch.

The black soil pitch generally assists the slow bowlers and looking at the conditions both teams are likely to make changes in their playing XIs. India might bring in left-arm chinaman Kuldeep Yadav in place of a fast bowler while Bangladesh are also likely to sacrifice a fast bowler in favour of a spinner.
